Chao Zhao received his Bachelor's degree in Physics from Nanjing University in 1982, and his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 1999. From 2000 to 2010, he worked at IMEC as a Senior Scientist. From 2010 to 2021, he served as a Full Professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and IMECAS. Between 2021 and 2026, he was Senior VP at the Beijing Superstring Academy of Memory Technology. In August 2026, he joined CXMT.
His research interests cover CMOS and DRAM processing technologies. He has authored and co-authored three books and 412 scientific papers. As an inventor and co-inventor, he holds 237 patents. A number of core patents have been adopted for mass production by leading international enterprises.
He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc), and Council Member & Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Materials Research Society (C-MRS).
