摘要

A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is a type of semiconductor laser. Compared with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and edge-emitting lasers (EEL), it has many advantages in terms of wafer probe testing; high power efficiency ; ultra-low power consumption; easy to achieve high-speed modulation; easy to couple to fiber; Dimensional arrays; and easy to integrate vertically, etc.

Since invented in 1977, VCSELs become the most versatile laser diodes with enormous market potential, including data communications applications, contactless sensing handheld devices, printing, chip-to-chip communications, 3D imaging and gesture recognition, display and automotive communications applications. VCSEL technology has gradually matured in Europe and the United States with the development of the data communication industry in the past 15 years. VCSEL production now ranks second among all types of semiconductor lasers, with annual production of tens of millions, second only to Fabry-Perot (FP) lasers used in optical disk drives in data storage, and is highly likely It will soon become the first.

In this presentation, we will discuss the state-of-the-art and the progress of VCSEL technology over the last few years from data communication to new emerging applications in consumer market, focusing on some key challenges from perspectives of reliability and mass production, etc.
