Year 2013 is considered a critical year for LED lighting take-off. The surge of LED fab investment in the past three years has not only driven LED equipment to an over $2 billion market but also brought massive capacity to the industry. That resulted in an oversupply situation which may very well persist throughout 2013 and beyond. The situation has forced LED suppliers become more aggressive expanding their portfolios into lighting applications. Though the underutilized China LED fabs remains a concern of oversupply, this would also help drive down component price that will eventually accelerate the LED penetration in lighting market.
On the other hand, the upstream LED material industry is now facing new challenge with a swarm of new entrants entering the sector, especially sapphire market. Sapphire price has been under enormous pressure since early 2011. Though the size migration to larger substrate and patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) adoption help the pricing trend, the industry still faces potential oversupply with new projects coming online in near future.
This presentation will cover latest year-to-date figures and forecast into 2014 for LED fabs investment worldwide. We will highlight cross-strait investment and capacity additions by regions from 2010 to 2014. The presentation will also talk about LED materials market in China and Taiwan with focuses on sapphire and MO market.
