Prof. Chenming Hu

FinFET Inventor
Microelectronic Scientist

Chenming Hu is a Professor at UC Berkeley. Formerly the Chief Technology Officer of TSMC, he currently serves as a board director of Ambarella and Inphi and the Chairman of Friends of Children with Special Needs. He led the development of FinFET--the 3D transistor which enabled scaling beyond 20nm, and the industry-standard transistor model (BSIM) used in the design of over $1T worth of ICs. He has received the IEEE Nishizawa Medal, Solid State Circuits Award and Andrew Grove Award; the EDA industry's Phil Kaufman Award and UC Berkeley's highest honor for teaching -- the Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2016, President Obama presented to him the US National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
