Biography

Joseph Zhu, solar business development manager, Borealis Asia Ltd (Shanghai) representative office. Joseph has been engaging in the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry since 2010 and started working for the PV division of one of the top Chinese state-owned power conglomerate, where Joseph was responsible for business strategy, PV industry analysis, market promotion, solar project technical and economic analysis and return on investment assessment, including China Golden Sun distributed generation project development. After that, Joseph has been in a role of sales and marketing for PV materials until now. Prior to working in the solar PV industry, Joseph had many years of experience in marketing, in the semiconductor and electronic components industry, and has worked for Cypress semiconductor, NXP semiconductors, PHILIPS electronics China group, etc. Joseph holds an MBA from China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), a Master of electronic engineering from Nanjing Aeronautical Institute, and a Bachelor degree in electronic engineering from Fudan University.

Abstract

Double glass modules in the market are dominated by the use of EVA encapsulant. It is however widely known that double glass modules produced with EVA encapsulants face reliability issues in case of moisture ingress. This is one reason why the market is using more and more polyolefin based encapsulants.

POE encapsulant, however, comes with production issues such as a long lamination cycle time and material flow out during processing. The higher cost of POE encapsulant has resulted in its lower market acceptance as compared to EVA encapsulants. Reliability issues such as adhesion loss and yellowing after accelerated ageing are often reported for POE-based double glass modules.

Borealis and Borouge have developed an innovative Polyolefin-based encapsulant, QuentysTM Borealis Polyolefin (BPO). This presentation shares with the audience, how QuentysTM BPO encapsulant can accelerate the growth of double glass modules in China. It features excellent processability, for instance, by means of shorter lamination cycle time compared to EVA and POE encapsulants. QuentysTM BPO encapsulant also demonstrates excellent module reliability, resulting into a lower LCOE.
